NFO TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST BANKING FRAUD

  1. Educate yourself on possible scams. Most banks include information on their websites regarding the most prevalent types of scams and tips on how to avoid becoming a victim.
  2. Familiarise yourself with your bank’s process to follow if you have been the victim of fraud or if you are suspicious of any activity related to your bank account including the relevant phone numbers and email addresses to contact.
  3. Review your transactions regularly.
  4. Don’t expect to be selected as a winner if you haven’t participated in the lottery or other competitions.
  5. Activate the screen lock of your phone or device and use a strong PIN or pattern to unlock it
  6. Make sure that the PIN to unlock your phone or device is different to your banking PINs.
  7. Never use your birthday or easy patterns like 12345 or 55555 as your PIN.
  8. Never save your banking PIN on your phone, device or write them down anywhere.
  9. Don’t save your passwords for your accounts on your phone or device. Memorise your passwords or use a password protector.
  10. If available, use biometrics (fingerprint or face lock) to access our banking app.
  11. Use different PINs for different bank cards and your app.
  12. When your phone or device is lost or stolen, call your bank immediately to delink your banking app from your device, and to allow your bank to take any other actions that may be necessary to protect your money.
  13. Scammers may call you pretending to be from your bank. Remember, your bank will never ask you to:
    1. Do a certain transaction
    2. Create a beneficiary
    3. Give your personal information, PINs or card details
  14. Never click on a link in an SMS or email that asks you to:
    1. Update or verify your personal information
    2. Sign in to online banking
  15. Never share your banking passwords, PINs or OTPs with anyone, not even family or friends. A bank will never call, SMS, email, or direct message you asking for this information.
  16. When you receive an SMS for a SIM swap or number port you did not request, call your network service provider immediately on their official number.
